Additional Details

Despite being a signatory to treaties banning slavery as late as the turn of the 20th century, Brazil continues to be one of the only countries in the world that still regularly uses slave labor. As recently as 2004 the Geneva-based ILO (International Labor Organization) cited Brazil's violations, confirming the existence of 25,000 known slaves most of whom work clearing the jungle or in pig-iron smelting plants. The ILO says the actual figure might be double.
